Shirley Scott, One for Me. Released on Strata East (SES 7430), 1974.
Shirley Scott’s One For Me has recently found its way to my stereo and I couldn’t be happier than a duck in water. A supreme being of the jazz organ and piano, Scott shines on this release, which also features Harold Vick, Billy Higgins and Jimmy Hopps. Although she has an extensive discography, I dare say this is my favourite album of the lot. I cannot resist to be consumed by the rich chords with lingering notes and evocative melodies. The music is sensitive; at the same instance it’s incredibly sexy (kudos to Vick on the tenor sax). Aside from the superb musicianship, Scott also produced the album and wrote the liner notes.
